Questions You May Have About Concrete Services

Central Virginia experiences plenty of freeze-thaw cycles, in which water seeps into concrete, freezes, expands, and causes cracking or flaking. A concrete mix with tiny air pockets, grooves that control where cracks form, and a good sealer all help it hold up. Skip rock salt on newer concrete and reach for sand or a concrete-safe deicer instead.

You can usually walk on new concrete after a day or two and drive on it after about a week. Concrete continues to gain strength for about 28 days, so hold off on heavy trucks or equipment until then. Hot Virginia summers can dry concrete out too quickly, and keeping it damp for the first few days helps it cure more strongly

Every two to three years works well for most driveways and patios around here. A good sealer blocks water, road salt, and stains, which really counts in our freeze-thaw winters. Wait at least 28 days after a new pour before you apply the first coat.

Concrete usually lasts longer, often 30 years or more, and it handles hot Virginia summers without softening. Asphalt flexes a bit better in freeze-thaw weather, but it needs resealing every few years and wears out sooner. If you want low maintenance and a long lifespan, concrete's the better bet.

Small hairline cracks and minor surface flaking usually just need a repair and a fresh seal. Wide cracks, sunken or heaving sections, or crumbling across large areas often mean the base underneath has failed, and that calls for replacement. Age matters too, since a driveway nearing 25–30 years old may not be worth patching.
